So let's say in that time we stopped 10 9/11's. That's 30,000 people still alive. Yet even the smallest estimate is that 50-100,000 innocent Iraqis are dead, not to mention millions whose lives are completely shattered.

WWII alone freed hundreds of millions of people from Japanese and Nazi oppressors and mass murderers. Preparations for the invasion of Normandy cost the lives of 1700 soldiers who died practicing for the invasion, not to mention the millions who died and millions more who were driven from their homes as refugees.

Point made, but these events bear no resemblance to eachother. The invasion of Iraq was planned long before 9-11, which became a fake excuse.

The invasion of Iraq was a failed attempt to control oil flow. It might look good by Shrub's terms, forcing US and British Oil Companies into that market, but we'll have to keep the guns pointed at the Iraqis to hold that position.

The Iraq war already cost more than giving everyone in this country free gasoline for a decade and to ad insult to injury, we're being gouged at the pump. No doubt an expression of Big Oil gratefulness.

Why do we have to get our oil from Iraq and the Middle East? You do know we have more oil in the shale of Colorado and Utah than all of the Middle Eastern countries combined. We have over a trillion barrels of oil there. And that's in just one region of this country. We have oil everywhere.

The story of alternate energy development in this country is a sordid tail of big fish eating little fish. Under Governor Brown, California led the nation in resource diversification. In the name of efficiency and utility turf wars, the alternative projects were shut down. Then came the energy crisis, a product of unpunished big fish fraud.

Your plan would be to drill and refine faster, with an unenforcable promise of increased supply leading to lower prices. That's a pipe dream because we are burning oil which took billions of years to make in one or two centuries.

Alternative energy is a meaningful long term solution. It will help our oil last longer. In todays market GM's $40,000 electric car would be a bargain. But no, instead the electric car, biomass energy were killed, not directly by the Dems, but by Corporate America. GM & Big Oil have conspired to maximize their return on oil before they ever let you have another technology. They bought out Oshevky's batteries and took the large capacity product off the market.

So as soon as Iraq's oil production comes back up to pre-war levels the price of gasoline should come down. Right? I know, you're going to say the dollar has dropped in value, but that won't be the only reason the price will stay up. I mean, people all over the world are paying much higher for gas. It's not just us. The price is going up everywhere.

Iraq pre-war production: 3mbpd. Right now they are at: 2mbpd. The price continues to go up even as they increase production.

The price is high because we aren't increasing our supply of energy and therefore the supply worldwide is the same, but with more and more people competing for that supply. Actually everyday, EVERY SINGLE DAY, the world has less oil. So the supply is dwindling and the demand is rising. While we do nothing.

We have vast, VAST reserves that would do a lot to cause the price of oil to plummet, but the Democrats have refused for 30 to allow us to have more. Even as our own population grows. FOR 30 YEARS!

Supply. Demand. If the Supply is higher than Demand then the price will fall. If, as is the current situation, the Demand is higher than the Supply then prices will rise.

I worked in oil exploration in the early eighties. I left during the oil price bust in late 1983.

What drives drilling activity is not the availability of leases.

What drives drilling activity is the price of oil.

In 1983, oil fell below $30 and drilling fell off dramatically.

I don't know what the threshold price is now, but we are way above it.

Current exploration is 36% above last year but the industry is still way below the peak rig count of the early eighties. It will take a while to get back there, but the trend is definitely in that direction.

Um lawnchair, the only problem with that is congressional Democrats. Republicans have time and again proposed drilling (ANWR comes immediately to mind) in Alaska and elsewhere. Also, most recently, senate Democrats in committee along party lines, voted down any preliminary work that has to be done to allow the oil companies to start getting the oil shale in Colorada.

Congressional Democrats have time and again blocked new coal and nuclear power plants, they have voted down or filibustered attempts to drill in ANWR or anywhere else where oil in easily harvested, they have refused to allow the construction of refineries by creating EPA regulations that make it impossible, they have even gone so far as to block the installation of wind turbines off the coast of Massachusetts because it would upset Teddy Kennedy's view from his estate.

Wait, let me get this straight. There was 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" uranium in Iraq! The A.P. story doesn't say, but I wonder where the hell all this uranium came from.

The U.N. nuclear agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency, estimates Iraq already had some 1.8 metric tons of low-enriched uranium and 500 tons of natural uranium, called yellowcake. Some of it had been legally acquired in West Africa more than two decades ago and was under IAEA seal.

Following this year's Iraq war, looters are reported to have entered the country's main nuclear site at Tuwaitha and some of the uranium was reported missing.

The IAEA estimates that at worst, only some 10 kilograms of uranium compounds went missing, an amount the U.N. nuclear agency says is not sensitive from a proliferation point of view.

As of 2002 the only positively confirmed nuclear material left in Iraq is 1.8 tons of low-enriched uranium and several tons of natural and depleted uranium. The material is in a locked storage site at the Tuwaitha nuclear research facility near Baghdad. Under the terms of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, this stock of material is checked once a year by an IAEA team. The most recent check was in January 2002, and none of the material had been tampered with at that time.
